Bad Runs Happen & 1000th Post Giveaway

2012 July 1
by Jess

My last two runs have been two of my worst runs in recent history. Yesterday, I woke up and decided to lounge around instead of heading out for my run first thing.

With six miles on my schedule I headed out around 10:30 without eating breakfast, without a gu and without cash. By the time I started my run it was 92 degrees in Central Park. When I trained for my very first marathon I thrived in the heat. Thirteen years later and I can’t take the heat.

Around 2.5 miles things got a little blurry and I realized I was starving. I walked a half mile to get water and jogged on after feeling a little bit better finishing with four miles for the day instead of 6. Mostly I was on the west side of Central Park (I live on the east side) when all this went down so I continued to run because it seemed easier than walking.

Today’s run was almost as bad but at least I started out on a better note. I got up and got out two hours earlier than Saturday. I had gu, a bottle full of nuun and cash with me. I was wearing my garmin just to clock the miles and when I looked down I noticed I was running at 1:30 slower than my normal long run pace.

I felt slightly frustrated but refused to let my pace get me down. When I stopped to refill my water bottle around mile six, I felt like pushing it any further would be a mistake. I just wasn’t feeling normal. Just like yesterday home was a good two miles away.

Turns out I felt like crap on today’s run because I had food poisoning.

Marathon training starts tomorrow and I’m somewhat frustrated but know that bad runs happen. I’d rather them happen now so I can learn the lessons that need to be learned before November 4th.

Insert current them song to get me through. ;)

Enough about me and my bad runs! Let’s celebrate instead. This post marks my 1000th post! Thank you for reading and encouraging me every day here, via twitter, on facebook, and on pinterest every single day!

To celebrate one of you will be sporting a new pair of Brooks running shoes on an upcoming run this summer!

Last month when meeting with designers from the Brooks shoe line, I learned about their two main categories of shoes float and feel. This gives the consumer a choice between a minimal shoe and a traditional shoe.

The glycerin 10 is a premium cushioned shoe  for neutral runners. I’m currently running in the Glycerin 9′s but have also had the chance to try out the 10′s. The shoe is plush and dreamy for a girl who likes a cushioned shoe. The forefoot doesn’t feel as bulky as my previous shoes giving them a lighter and “closer to the ground” feel. Out of the box they didn’t give me blisters and seem to fit my wide-ish foot well.

You have three chances to win. Please leave a separate comment for each entry.

  1. Leave a comment telling me your #1 running goal for 2012. (mandatory entry)
  2. Tweet this “Enter to win a pair of @BrooksRunning Shoes to celebrate @FitChickNYC’s 1000th post and many more #runhappy posts http://ow.ly/bWTu0″
  3. Subscribe to my YouTube channel and leave me a comment telling me you did so.

You have until Thursday, July 5th at 12:00 midnight EST to enter. Open to U.S. resident only.

{Disclosure: This is not a sponsored post. FCITC is a Brooks Run Happy Blog Ambassador for which compensation is provided. This post and giveaway celebration idea was all my own.}

Congratulations to Amanda N.!! You won a pair of Brooks Glycerin 10s!

You of course know that bad runs happen, but don’t let that get you down. For every bad there are always better runs coming your way. The heat is helping nobody. Taking cash with you is actually really smart bc you never know what you need! Great tip.

Good luck with marathon training, the fact you are signed up shows your athletic prowess.

Brooks running shoes aka little dream boats.

My running goal for 2012 – to enter a race, small or big, while pregnant. Wish me luck, haha:)

As for the shoes, my #1 running goal is to run a sub-4 hour marathon in New York City on November 4. So basically, I’m going to chase you for a while until you’re so far ahead of me I can’t hang on. Hehe.

I have lost 52 pounds and in order to maintain this body and lifestyle I sign up for challenges that scare the daylights out of me! I love training though…dont let the bad runs get you down, the heat plays a huge role in how your body reacts when you push (and that is not even including the food poisoning!)
