Class Review: Nalini Method
2011 June 3
Class: Nalini Method
Class Location: Nalini Method Studio
Instructor: Rupa Mehta
Class Description: “Our signature and unique mind/body conditioning takes place in an hour-long class that utilizes principles from Yoga, Pilates, aerobics, barre work, strength and resistance training” (from the Nalini Method website).
Reviewer: Jess of FCITC
Favorite things about the class:
- The studio is located in a great open space.
- Friendly and inviting staff.
- Balanced strength training workout.
Least favorite things about the class:
- Exercise instructions were hard to understand at times. Due to the space of the room, it was hard to find where to look to find the instructor who was demonstrating an exercise.
- Not as challenging as some of the other “barre” workouts.
- Didn’t enjoy the use of the ankle weights, although it does make the workout different from other barre style classes.
Overall class rating: 2 0ut of 5 stars
Additional Comments: This is not a class I would spend $35 to take.

Hmm, hard to understand is not good for me.
I had a totally different experience than you! I just took Rupa’s class for the fourth time, and I found it to be one of the absolute best of the barre classes. I also thought it was more challenging than the others, with the possible exception of Figure 4, which I need to try again. I was just telling someone I need to find a way to incorporate it into my routine more, I think I will improve so much from it.
I wonder if you happened to have a bad class or something?
I have to agree with Dori on this one, I absolutely loved Rupa’s class! Not as challenging as Figure 4, but I felt that there was a lot more personal attention in Nalini which, despite having trouble understanding what to do next (I really blame my own frazzled nature for this, I don’t think I EVER know what’s going on in class), Rupa was always there to help me into the right form. For me, the arms and core were especially tough–lots of planks and push-ups when I went. Less time was spent actually at the barre than at other bar-based classes, but I kind of liked this; I get bored standing in one place for more than about seven minutes. And there was still plenty of leg work thanks to the ankle weights.
Great to hear you found something you really like!
The class I went to was super packed and there was little to no personal attention given. It was hard to understand what to do because the instructor wasn’t speaking up loud enough to be heard and or was in the far corner of the room demonstrating an exercise, instead of in the middle of the room where everyone could see. That being said, every class is different no matter where one goes to take class and therefore each experience is not the same, obviously. Thanks for sharing about your positive experiences!
