Red Velvet at Crunch Gym

Remember when Pink sang at the Grammy’s last year? Okay, neither do I. What I do remember is that she performed an amazing aerial dance number while singing.

Well, guess what I did this past weekend? I took Red Velvet, an aerial dance class at Crunch Gym.

“This delectable lyrical dance class uses a flowing red silk as your partner and prop. Learn add-on choreography as you move, swing and hang, sure to wet your appetite.”

The class begins with what the instructor called a “dance warm-up”. I’m not sure what this means in the dancing world but I envisioned dancing. To my benefit, I was wrong the warm-up was a series of stretches for the upper and lower body, not dancing.

After the warm-up we did a few push-ups and planks and then moved on to silks aka red velvet. We began with hanging ab moves and quickly moved on to learning a little choreography.

Much like in Anti-Gravity, this class takes some “letting go” and trusting yourself and red velvet.

Watching our instructor, Jenn fly through the air with grace was beautiful to watch. I on the other hand never know what to do with myself. I mean I’m a girl who can’t  grapevine let alone figure out how to spin around on a rope without looking like I’m tangled up in a spider web.

The hour class was over in the blink of an eye. I felt a sense of accomplishment for trying something outside of my comfort zone and for not landing on my head.

If you’re looking for a new adventure this is the class for you. It is currently being offered at the 59th street Crunch Gym on Saturdays from 12:00-1:00. The fee for the class for both members and non-members is $15 a class. Considering you may end up looking Pink did while on tour, I’d say it’s worth the price.
