Beat the Dreadmill Blues

2010 October 7
by Jess

It’s obvious why people often refer to the treadmill as the “dreadmill”. Running in place, staring out into no where gets boring rather quickly. I have solution to the dreadmill blues – walk instead of run.

My heart rate gets up just as high briskly walking uphill on the treadmill as it does during a causally paced run. Next time you  find yourself dreading a treadmill workout download a great workout soundtrack and try a hill walking workout.  Here’s one of my favorites: (click to print out)

What a great workout – I hate the treadmill but I think I could be ok with walking on it.

The incline would be a great workout – and help with hills while running outside.

    Thanks for posting!

I love doing the hill course on the treadmill. Such a surprise when the incline changes either walking or running.

And when you’re walking on an incline, don’t hang on to the treadmill for dear life.

This workout is a killer! I did these workouts when I was recovering from a running injury and I was able to jump right back into running without feeling like I had lost any momentum.

The owner of my gym set me up with “The Walk” before I was running. I think it ranked as one of the toughest cardio workouts I did. It was really similar to this one and it definitely got my heart pumping!

Walking on the treadmill is actually a really good workout, especially with hills. Talk about working your bootay!

Jess! Love your blog! I’ve been following you on here and on Twitter….just haven’t commented amidst my super busy month. Love the idea of doing the inclined walk rather than the jog. I currently run, but I know I love taking it slower once in a while in order to switch it up…but it also does my calves some good! I love how amazing they feel after an uphill climb. :)

So many people don’t take advantage of doing incline and intervals on the treadmill. Try going backwards at a 2.0 pace and 10% incline in a squat position. FEEL THE BURN IN THE QUADS!!!

This sounds like a great workout…great variety and a lot of hills! I’ll try it out!

I agree – hill walking is so much better than running on the treadmill. Cute pic of you, too!

Yeah, I seriously hate treadmills. It’s not so much the fact that I find them boring, but my feet and shins are always really sore after I use one. It’s just not worth it to me. Intervals definitely help the monotony though, that’s for sure! And yes, this one sounds tough. I could do it on the elliptical!! I much prefer the elliptical for my shins and feet.

I do mix it up on the treadmill & works different parts too! Lots one can do on the treadmill!

you are SO right!! walking up a steep incline actually increases my heart rate more! (and it’s easier on the knees. bonus.) i do intervals as well, a peak at 11-12% and a min. about 7%. thanks for sharing :)
