Simple Tips For Uphill Running
- Lean slightly into the hill
- Pump your arms a little more than you normally do while running
- Your foot should hit the ground on the mid- to front part of your foot. (Especially for heel strikers)
Running up hill isn’t really ever easy, but simple adjustments can improve your uphill running experience. That’s true for just about every exercise.
What’s one simple adjustment that you made during your workout today that made an exercise more effective?

I’d like to participate, but I can’t find them on Facebook for some reason.
I do find my foot hits midfoot naturally when I run uphill.
Great tips. I’ll have to consider those the next time I run up a hill, which hopefully won’t be too soon
Yeah, I just don’t like to run as much as I used to
Yesterday I was using my elliptical and I started focusing more on using my arms, rather than just my legs. When I use both equally, the work out is MUCH more effective and efficient. I do have to concentrate though, because my legs have a tendency to do all the work!
Great tips….really great tips! I run hill sprints from time to time and I’m sure my form is a hot mess.
nice cause but are americans the only people allowed to make a pledge for this?
Hah next time I run a hill I’ll try to concentrate more on your tips than cursing it
ok, it’s not my goal to sound mean but i just don’t see how these running tips can be claimed as your own when they are so common that any mildly curious runner has probably read them on the internet.
I’m sure you are right and that this information is readily available. These happen to be the tips I myself have been using for the last 20 years. The two particular clients I mention, had not read the information and benefited from my experiences.
Two good tips:)
I would definitely repeat your tips, ones you remember are the ones that matter most!
Great tips! Anytime I can get running advice, I take it! I brought my Camelbak along for 4 miles today. I usually only take it on longer runs, but it was so worth toting it for a shorter run. I feel so much better when I can get a sip of water along the way.
thanks for the good tips!
Love your tips! I haven’t experience up hill running yet but when I do, I’ll be prepared, thanks to you!
It’s always great to know you’re helping someone out, and that they’re using your advice to help other people out!
Totally unrelated: You have NO idea how excited I am for August 5th. NO IDEA!
I’m excited too!
Thanks for the tips for running uphill! I’m always looking for tips because it’s the hills that really get to my shins.
That is such a compliment that people are using your tips. I am always complimented when a parent takes my advice on their child’s learning or another teacher uses one of my ideas- even if I may have found it, I was the one who passed it on to them
Hopefully when I can get back to running again I’ll put these to use!
Thanks for including the Fruit2O Link!

Thanks for your support and congratulations on your “small change!”
Ahhh I hate running up hills!!! But I always feel good afterward! Those are good tips
I agree, there is nothing better than when you hear clients correctly sharing what you have taught them! I love that, and you’re tips are great! Your clients are lucky to have such a knowledgeable, experienced trainer!
Yes, it’s great when you teach someone something and they then teach someone else!
Great running tips!
I’ve been working on my form during my Dailey Method classes…
I love when people turn to me for advice or share my advice as well. It certainly makes me feel respected.
And seeing as I couldn’t get in a workout today, I guess my day was made effective by caring for a sick but somehow still super energetic toddler.
I do those things! Though I still dont make it very far lol. Great cause!
Ah, I was hill walking, hill jogging, side stepping & more on that treadmill this monr!
Ah, I was hill walking, hill jogging, side stepping & more on that treadmill this morn!
I hate running up hills but these are great tips!
Not really a tip to make my exercise more effective, but I’ve been trying to get into bed at 9:30 pm every night, read a little and then to turn off the lights by 10:15 – that way I get up early enough to run before work.
I’m trying really hard!
Excellent tips! I ache just thinking of running up a hill LOL!
