An Angel Gets Her Wings

2010 July 26

I’m no angel, but I recently got to tryout a pair of wings in an Antigravity® Yoga Class at Crunch Gym. This was one of the most unique workout classes I’ve experienced.

Here’s the description of the Antigravity® “Wings” class:

“Stretch further and hold challenging postures longer using a flowing fabric hammock as your only prop. With the fabric as a soft trapeze, you’ll learn simple suspension techniques to move into seemingly impossible inverted poses to relieve compressed joints and align the body from head to toe.”

When I arrived at Crunch at 5:40 p.m. the place was already buzzing with activity. The staff was friendly and accommodating which made me feel at home.

When I walked into the yoga studio I still had fifteen minutes until class was to start and students were already hanging upside down by the class props.  Knowing I had just walked out of my comfort zone, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself. Just when I began to freak out a little, Deanna our instructor, entered the studio. She immediately introduced herself and began reassuring the new students in class.

She was an amazing and patient instructor. She gave clear concise directions which reassured me that I wouldn’t end up on my head. Luckily there were 9 other new people in the class which meant the class was geared towards us newbies.

There were parts of the class that were similar to any other “regular” yoga class. With one or two limbs being held up by the silks while in a yoga pose, I got a deeper and more supported stretch than I do on the floor. The real challenge was working with the silk. This meant trusting Deanna’s instructions, the silks, my own abilities and in Crunch’s liability insurance. ;)

Deanna’s thorough instructions eventually led to each of us learning how to flip into a supported inversion pose.

The class was fun, scary and challenging. I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to working out, so this is the perfect class for someone who needs to learn to “let go”. I also believe that working should be fun and as you can tell, Crunch is nailing the fun part!

Crunch believes that “seeing is believing”. If you would like to see for yourself what it’s like to workout at Crunch, they are offering you a one week pass and one free personal training session. To redeem this offer go here. Being as we just discussed how to allocate a fitness budget yesterday, this could help.
