Strengthening My Weaknesses

2010 June 8
by Jess

I think I found one of the best ways to strengthen my weaknesses (or at least the weak areas in my body) at The Bar Method Soho. I was really excited to finally get the chance to review class at this new studio.

I’m officially recommending this workout to all my friends but especially my running friends. The workout really hits all those muscles that we runners need to keep strong, but often neglect because we’re too busy running. It also stretches the tightest areas of our bodies such as the hamstrings, hips and glutes.

It seems this class would be the perfect place to increase muscular endurance for us runners. It uses body weight or light weight exercises that would be helpful with running long distances.

I actually have so much to say about this place that I’m writing two posts. The first post is about the workout itself and the second post is on what other fitness professionals can learn from walking into The Bar Method studio.

The class was structured so that we started with upper body moves, moved to the bar for lower body moves, and finished up with core moves for the glutes, hamstrings, abs and low back.

It’s been a really long time since I’ve done a workout that’s completely different than anything I normally do. Every part of my body was worked to fatigue within the hour. There’s much to be said for trying a new type of exercise and the way it challenges your body in new and exciting waysPicture 1.png.

This sounds like a really interesting workout. I am beginning to train for my first marathon and determined to find a workout that can incorporate the stretching and strength training I need, too. It’s not easy….wish I was in the area and could try a class!

Have you taken ballet before? Is this class similar to a ballet class?

Samantha – I have taken a ballet workout class before and this was a lot more challenging than the ballet class I took. S

I heard about this! I wish there was something like this around me. The closest thing (that isn’t really close) to this, is that pole dancing class I took for a month. It was fun and a great upper body workout! I noticed there are DVDs can you do them at home if you don’t have one of those bars?
