When I Grow Up
Yesterday I asked “If you could have any career in the world without having to go back to school what would you choose? It seems more than one of you would be a Country Music Star. Well, now it’s my turn to answer the question. But first a little info.
On February 9th I signed up for updates from the US Department of Health and Human Services. In just over a months time I received 40 emails regarding food products that have been recalled.
If you’ve watched Food Inc. ( I still haven’t) or read the Omnivore’s Dilemma, you know that there is really something wrong with food regulation and food systems in the US.

I really don’t know much about food safety or exactly how food is regulated. I also don’t know anything about all the lobbying groups that effect decisions that are made by the FDA. However, something needs to change.
What I do know is that if I could snap my fingers and have any job in the world I would want a job in food policy.

I think that sounds like an awesome position for you, my dear!
I’ve seen Food, Inc. a very good flick…an eye opener which confirmed why I eat the way I do. SEE IT!
whoa – your inbox looks scary
That would be awesome to be able to have influence over the food industry and right all the wrongs. I wonder how much influence the policy makers themselves have and how much is driven by corporation.
My mom works in food service and she has had to take a bunch of sanitation classes, I’ve always thought it would be super interesting! I think something in a school food system would be an awesome job.
I was in marketing for a company that worked with food safety and I learned a lot of very scary things about food safety.
I’m happy I do not eat a lot of processes food now. This is scary to know all those items in a month were recalled. I may have to sign up for these email alerts.
wow…that’s a lot of concerning e-mails. I think the food industry needs someone like you!
That would be a cool job! I can’t believe all that food has been recalled, disgusting!
Thats for your comment on my blog. It’s nice to hear from an instructor. I do understand from your point of view, but I just don’t really get why it would bother other people. Especially in my class because the instructor is on an microphone, so hearing him is not an issue at all. The music is way louder than us. But it’s always good to hear another point of view. I definitely am not claiming to be right about this, I’m just more confused by it, so I appreciate your perspective
Its scary isn’t it? It is so scary to know most people probably don’t even recognize the issues and problems with our food today and the food industry.
Food, Inc. was a huge eye-opener for me, the control that big food corps have over the FDA is just sad.
I just saw Food, Inc. too. It’s really scary. I think you have such a down-to-earth goal where you could really help people. We were all being selfish, right?
I think I am the only bloggie who has not seen food inc! I need to watch it already lol
That would be great to help out in that capacity….yes the food system is wacked out for sure….see food inc it is good and read fast food nation if you have not already!
Have a great day!
I totally agree with you. Other than owning a restaurant (my number one wish!) I think having a job in food policy would be so fun, or at least challenging and rewarding! It may not actually be fun, as I’m sure you would run into many people who have different opinions or who are only out for themselves…but that happens with any job I guess. Anyway, I like this idea. I hope things start to change, FAST!
Interesting! I think that would be a fitting job for you!
wow that is really interesting/amazing/disgusting. I also saw Food, Inc and it made me not want to eat meat for a couple of weeks. I can’t decide if it’s better to not eat meat or to only buy organic meats. My husband still eats meat so I buy organic for him.
