Something I Can’t Do

2010 February 22
by Jess

I can’t do a Pilates roll-up.  It’s embarrassing but true. For whatever reason I really suck at these.

I’m hoping all this embarrassment over one silly exercise can be a thing of the past.  Over the course of the next 4 weeks, I’m going to commit to working on perfecting my Pilates roll-up.  Here’s how I’m going to do it.

  • Commit to practicing 3 days per week.
  • Complete 1 Pilates workout per week in addition to practicing the roll-up.

Tomorrow, I’ll take a “before video” of my mad pilates skills.  On March 23rd, I’ll record an “after video”.  I’ll then post the two videos so the world can see my improvements.

I’m also hoping that Meg’s video will help me achieve my goal.

What exercise do you struggle with, but would like to be able to do correctly?

pull ups!! first goal is to do one with no help, then to do multiple.

I can do the Pilates roll-up but not pull ups! Those are so hard for me!

I’m with you on the pilates roll ups! I struggle all the time with them :)

Pilates roll ups killed me the first time! I used to not be able to do push ups. Jillian Michaels helped me with that! haha

You’ll be doing pilates roll ups in no time! I’d like to be able to do a back bend/bridge like I could when I was little. I need to work on my flexibility. I can get up, but can’t hold the pose for very long at all and it’s not comfortable!

I feel like my boobs are too big for me to do pilates. Does that make sense? All that sitting up with a straight back and squared shoulders hurts!! cant wait to see your videos!

Pull ups are my challenge! I can do chins, no problem, but right now I’m stuck at 3-4 pulls and I’m toast!

Joanna, that’s a great number of pull-ups! I can’t do them either, but I thought I’d start working on something that will take less time to achieve. I will however move on to pull-ups at some point.

Lindsay – you are too funny! you win an award for funniest comment of the day!

    Chin-ups. I maybe can do 2.

If I could hold a plank for longer than 60-70 seconds, I would feel like a stud!!!

I agree super hard! I have a hard time with crow pose in yoga.
    have a good day……

I’ve been working on my “real” pushups! I try to add in more big girl pushups every day!

I can’t for the life of me hold a C curve in Core Fusion for an extended period of time. I’m working on it though! Good luck with your roll up!

Know how you feel! I can barely get up there– and that’s with shaking and trembling with the occasional grunt. but practice makes perfect!

  16. February 23, 2010

I am not the best at pushups or pullups. My gym doesn’t have a weight assisted pull up machine, so I have done them in 2 years, and I’ve reverted back to the “girly” pushups :)

I’m not even sure what a pilated roll-up IS lol. But if you keep workin’ at it, there’s no doubt you can do it!

Jackknife. The ones with your feet on a stability ball? Yeah, I fall off. Every time.

I like your goal! I can actually do the pilates roll up, but it did take a couple times to get it down. I have trouble doing the downward dog in yoga (yikes!). I just can’t seem to keep my heels on the ground like I’m supposed to, it’s pathetic. Like you, I’m hoping practice makes perfect.

Don’t feel bad about not being able to do the pilates roll-up because I don’t even know what it is, haha!

I have the most trouble with running. The most I’ve ran is 2 miles and I’m aiming for 3. The thing is, though, I just don’t think I *like* running…and I’m okay with that!

I think we jynxed the city..talking about good weather and good moods yesterday! lol. I struggle with doing aerobics/taebo type moves correctly. I always end up hurting myself when I take a class at the gym instead of sticking to the machines.

  22. February 23, 2010

Um yes. I cannot do a pilates roll up either! I try to avoid them on work out videos because I just can’t do them so it’s almost like a waste of time. Except I really should try to get better at them like you are haha

  23. February 23, 2010

I’ve always been a horrible runner! Not really my thing. I love Yoga and Pilates though! Keep at it : )

  24. February 25, 2010

I can do a roll up, but I can’t do that pose Averie has on her blog today. My arms are just too short compared to my torso to lift myself up that high.
