Reinventing the Wheel

Hey Soul Cycle, there’s a new kid in town!

But I hardly doubt that’s new news to them. A former co-founder and instructor at Soul Cycle, partnered up with Tiki Barber to open up her own shop.

Flywheel Sports, a new indoor cycling studio opened this past week.

Before this cold took over my life, I had the opportunity to try out a class at Flywheel. The studio offers a few unique features. Including a TorqBoard that displays various stats about your ride including your “torque” (resistance) level.

But what NY’ers really want to know is how Flywheel compares to Soul Cycle.

Price:

Soul Cycle                       Flywheel

1 Ride = $32                   1 Ride = $30

5 Rides = $160               5 Rides = $135

10 Rides = $310            10 Rides = $250

20 Rides = $600           20 Rides = $450

Shoe Rental = $3          Shoe Rental = FREE

Water = ???                     Water = FREE

Each offer other ride packages.

The Studio:

  • SC has run of the mill spin studio set-up. The space feels like a badass place to workout.
  • FW has stadium seating which is suppose to enhance the riders view of the instructor. The space feels like a movie theater, not like a workout space.

The Workout:

The workouts are very different. However, this probably has less to do with the studio and more to do with the instructor. I’ve taken classes at SC with instructors that I’ve loved and instructors that aren’t worth my money. The energy level at my FW class was lacking and overall I was unimpressed with the instructor. (Note: I’ve only gone to one class, and plan to try another instructor)
The Question:
Do I take a SC  class today with Nick and spend a fortune?  Or chance it with a new instructor at Flywheel for a more affordable price?

Oh my, its only 10-15 for a cycle class here in Cleveland! Go with the one with free shoe rental and water for sure! Although its always nice to try out a new place.

I have been wondering how FlyWheel was going to compare to SC, thanks for the write up! Fly Wheel seems like is going to have more of a competitive vibe to it which seems so opposite of SC. Have you tried Janet at SC? I am OBSESSED with her, if you haven’t tried her class you really should!
