Quick Tip: Just Breathe

Sometimes figuring out when/how to breathe while working out is harder than doing the actual exercise itself.  Here are a few guidelines for breathing.

  • Yoga: Inhale and exhale through the nose.
  • Pilates: Inhale through the nose. Exhale through the mouth
  • Strength Training: Inhale on the easy part of the exercise.  Exhale on the hard part.*

*Not always the case, but generally a good guide.

Tomorrow, I’ll be exhaling as I throw punches in my boxing class at Tiger Schulmann.  Trust me after the week I’ve had I’m ready to hit the heavy bag.

    Yep, this is a question that I always ask! I never know how to breath when doing different exercises, so thanks! I think I’ve been doing it wrong in yoga, but they never say anything on the video so I never know!

    Regarding the nutritional yeast, it tastes almost like parmesan cheese, and cheddar cheese mixed :) It’s delicious, really!

    Those are great tips. I have the Pilates breathing down, but I always have trouble breathing out through the nose for yoga. And for strength training, I always forget. Thanks for the reminder!

    Thanks for the breathing rundown. I’m never certain, especially with weight lifting. And being mindful of my breathing in yoga is key.

    Great tips! I think breathing is one of the reasons I have so much trouble with distance swimming. As a runner, I am so accustomed to being able to breathe whenever and that’s not the case with running. It really messes me up! Any advice for swimming and breathing?

    I was so confused when I first started yoga because I was familiar with pilates and I was like wait, when am I breathing, out of what part?

    I hope your boxing class goes well. I haven’t taken boxing since I was studying abroad and I was so sore I could barely take notes in class the next day, oops!

    I would love to take a boxing class.

    Great tips on the breathing. In strength training I tend to hold my breath which is not good. Always breathe out on the exertion….it helps.
