Hugs or Drugs?
When your not feeling good what do you prefer hugs or drugs? I’m totally a hugs kinda person. I realized last night that I have not had a prescription medication in over 10 years. I’m lucky that I don’t really get sick all that often.
Rather than hitting up the pharmacy aisle at Duane Reade, I’d rather sit at home drink fluids and take hot showers with a little eucalyptus oil.
This brings me back to yesterday when I went to see the Nurse Practitioner at work. She too was just getting over the exact cold that I have. She asked if I had a list of her recommended medications.

I thought she meant a list of several different drugs that I could choose from. But wait, let’s take a closer look.

- Neti Pot
- 2 sudafeds 3x a day
- 1 Muxinex
- 1 antihistamine before bed
- Saline nasal spray.
- Saline… I don’t even know what this one is
- Hot Toddy (non alcoholic
) - Fluids
- Zinc Lozenges
- Probiotics or 10 ounces of yogurt
- Humidifier
- Warm compresses
- Steam
That’s not what she meant at all! She wanted me to do all of these things! Feeling overwhelmed, I choose none of the above last night and suffered the consequences. Today I bought an OTC drug and a humidifier. I’m starting to feel a little bit better. Now I’m just waiting for an appropriate time to go to sleep.
What’s your “go to” remedy for being sick, but not sick enough to go to the doctor?

I’m a big fan of humidifiers, I swear they cure everything. I also love hot tea when I’m sick and a lot of rest/sleep.
rest, lay low, drink coffee, bitch and moan b/c it makes me feel better, zinc, up my probiotics, and pray to god i feel better in 24 hrs, and usually i do
hang in there babe!
Lots of fluids (tea & soup), rest, & a steamy shower.
Get better soon!
Umm, I go neither. I’m not a touchy person when I’m sick usually. And hate the drug side effects unless it’s really bad or at night and I can’t sleep. I wait it out… Hope you get well soon! Super psyched yall got great snow!!!!!!!
i learned last year that taking time to rest is the key for me – up until this past fall, i was the kind of girl who would work through ANY kind of illness. I would be sniffly and miserable at the office bc i HAD to get work done. I would be sitting in bed on my computer crunching numbers and replying to emails.
This past fall i got a bit sick; flu/coldish. My boss MADE ME GO home and promise to go to bed. I laid around for the next 32 hours, taking in LOTS of fluids, and sleeping most of the time.
One thing I swear by when I’m sick is CHANGING my “workout”- for example – in the midst of race season is when I got sick, and I had a run planned for that day – but instead of freaking out about it, I made myself do go for a 10 minute walk to get fresh air, and then did an HOUR LONG deep stretching session. [this was before I knew v. much about yoga at all, though i would probably have done yoga poses now) I dont know how medically accurate this is – but I do feel that moving my body COMPLETELY in ways that I dont always make time for helped me to move PAST the illness & sweat through the “gross” feeling.
and now i wrote a novel on your blog post.
Hope you are feeling WONDERFUL soon!! xoxo
Rest and milk it for all it’s worth! I’m a big baby when I’m sick
. OTC meds make me feel so groggy, but help me sleep when I’m all stuffed up. I love EmergenC….if anything, I think it tastes great! I hope you feel better soon!
We used to have a humidifier but stopped using it for some reason.
Well I am trying to drink a lot of fluids-hot ones and rest meaning no exercise though I am going stir crazy!Taking my probiotics and drinking green monsters.
How about you? How ar eyou feeling?
For me, it’s rest, lots of water, vitamin C, tea, and warm showers. I’ll use Sudafed if I absolutely have to, but it’s kind of addicting to me, so I try to avoid it.
I usually pop airborne like tic tacs lol..and drink lots and lots of fluids
Dang, girl! I’m sorry you’re still not feeling 100%!
I tend to drink a ton of tea and water and complain A LOT when I’m sick! Hang in there, sweetheart!
That list is the perfect example of why our pharmacueticals industry is so freaking RICH! Them and the supplement industry. People will do anything to “get better fast”, even though in my opinion the more drugs you take the more sick you will make yourself! Nick is obsessed with that nose spray and I’m convinced it doesn’t work, it only makes it worse. I just use the nose spray once or twice, no more, then I take Advil and drink plenty of fluids, maybe even Gatorade. I’m also active and go for walks on the treadmill (no running) and get plenty of rest! Sometimes I take Nyquil or Dayquil for energy and so I can sleep.
I hope you feel better.
I definitely big on zinc lozenges. Also, a basin full of hot water to steam your head over works surprisingly well!
