Don’t Hold Your Breath
2010 February 20
The real title for the post should be ” Quick Tip: Just Breathe Part II”.
Yesterday, I posted a few guidelines on breathing while exercising. It can really get confusing when alternating between different types of workouts. Especially when switching from yoga to pilates.
Due to reader requests, here are a few additional guidelines on breathing while working out:
- Swimming: Inhale when your head is out of the water. Exhale when your head is in the water. The pattern would be stroke, stroke, breathe, stroke, stroke, breathe so that you are alternating sides when you are inhaling. (Note: All swimming info. is from the husband)
- Running: Inhale through both the mouth and nose. Exhale through the mouth.
Tomorrow, I’ll post about my boxing class at Tiger Schulmann. As always if you guys have any fitness questions, please feel free to send me an email or leave your question in the comment section. Thanks for reading!

thank you so much
thanks for the breathing posts. good to know! when swimming, you can do any number of strokes between breaths that you want. I find three strokes works best for me because that means you end up breathing on alternating sides, which is good to get used to.
Ok, so I’m doing the running breath right! YEAH! I don’t run, but I use the elliptical, but I figure that’s the same idea. Thanks for the tips, I needed this.
Hope you’re having a good weekend!
Wait – inhale through the nose and mouth at the same time (I can’t do both at the same time?) Or one or the other? Sorry for the silly question…
I tend to be through my nose and out through my mouth when I run.
Can’t wait to hear about your boxing class!
Meg, that’s not a silly question at all! Yes, it is recommended that you breathe in through both your nose and mouth while running. Weird, but true.
I trained outdoors today and it was so much harder! I seriously need to work on my breathing, esp with the high winds…brrrrrrrr
I feel like I was too ambitious signing up for this 5k, I am really scared
Mari! I am so proud of you! You are going to rock this race!
