Know When to Fold

2010 January 20
by Jess

On Monday, I spent more time pumping up my tires and setting up the trainer than I did riding the trainer.

Why?  Because my heart rate was not responding to hard efforts which meant that I wasn’t recovered from my previous workouts.  My heart rate hovered right at 114, even while sprinting.  Which is not normal for me.  After 12 minutes of riding without an increase in heart rate, I folded.

Previous workouts for the weekend were:

  • Saturday 7 miles with 3 hill sprints & 1/2 mile hard effort
  • Sunday  11.5 miles

My legs felt tired, but I thought I could handle a workout.  If I continued the workout while not recovered it could lead to overtraining which can lead to injury.  At the very least I’d be digging myself into a hole that would take longer than I’d like to recover from.  Considering my race is this weekend, I didn’t want that to happen.

You have to know when to fold.

Good for you -I know how hard it is to stop during a workout. But you are spot on. I think it would be so cool to have a trainer for my bike!

“If I continued the workout while not recovered it could lead to overtraining which can lead to injury.” You’re right. After living with an injury for so long, I’m always glad to hear people who exercise common sense. Nothing’s worth being hurt for weeks, months, or years!

I’m so bad at knowing when to fold. Or even when I know I need to fold, actually folding!
Good job listening to your body.

Taking a rest day is just as important as working out regularly…you are so smart to listen to the cues your body is giving you and follow!!! Our bodies know what is good…we just forget to listen some of the time!

I don’t think most people know when to fold. Glad you listened to your body! I’ll admit that sometimes I forget to :)

good for you for listening to your body…this is something that I am “training” myself to do.

Interesting! When this happens to me I just think I’m wimping out…I never attributed it to over training!

Interesting, I didn’t know that! I don’t ever check my heart rate, but if I start, I will remember this. It’ll be a good excuse to take a break :)
