Trainers Dish

When I read the article “What your personal trainer is really thinking” in Time Out New York, I knew I knew I had to answer a few of these questions myself.

Since there happen to be two trainers in my house, I also asked the Husband the same questions. His answers are in blue and mine are in pink.

Q: What is the most unusual thing you’ve said to encourage someone in getting in that last rep?

My grandmother can lift more weight than you.

My last client didn’t have any trouble with this weight and she weighs 105 lbs.

Q: How long does a client have to work with you to honestly start seeing results?

Three Weeks.

Four weeks if they’re keeping up with their homework, when they’re not working with me.

Q: Do protein powders work? *just our opinion, we don’t make nutrition recommendations.

Yes

Undecided

Q: Have you had a client who was obviously anorexic or addicted to working out?

Yes.

Yes.

Q: What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever seen someone workout in?

Three piece suit.

Ballet flats and skinny jeans.

Q: Worst breach of gym etiquette you’ve ever seen?

Spitting

A woman lying on a locker room bench naked on a daily basis.

Q: Have you ever accidentally injured a client?

I’ve injured a lot of clients.

Does making someone puke count?

Q: Strangest request you’ve ever gotten.

If a client could stay at my apartment while their divorce gets finalized.

To only workout the left side of their body.

Q: Have you ever made a client cry?

Only from laughing.

What ‘s your question? Ask and we may be brave enough to answer. ;)

I see some get-ups from yogis! Everything from men in skirts (no offense guys if you like to wear your skirts) to women who can braid their armpit hair to those who havent showered in weeks to those who are wearing the tiniest tiniest shorts on account of the room being hot. Yeah. Ok then.
    Love this one Jess!

What a hoot! You too have more patience than I do. I could only train clients that are willing to work as half as hard as I do.

    Question for you guys:

Have you ever fired a client? If so, why?

This was lots of fun! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

Have you ever had a really rude client? If so, what did you do? The other day I saw a client verbally abusing a trainer at the gym because she hadn’t seen physical change in her body after five sessions! She was saying awful things to the trainer in a very loud, annoying voice; I felt very uncomfortable just hearing it…

Love this post! I’m cracking up over here. The first one especially. “my grandmother can lift more than you!”

If you were to ask me, I’d say protein powders are a waste of money. Unless you are talking whey protein, or branch chain amino acids. I think there is something to those, when consumed after a workout.

    Happy Sunday to oyu!

I loved this! OK, here’s mine.

What’s the worst/lamest excuse you’ve ever heard from someone? (i.e., why they missed a workout(s), why they aren’t losing weight, etc.)

I love this post! Lots of fun, thanks! I can’t believe someone actually went to the gym in ballet flats and skinny jeans, that’s great!

The new lady I am training was wearing shoes and a dress! I made her take the shoes off and put on sneakers but I let her keep the dress on (I think it was religious reasons)

Seriously…people working out in street clothes (barring religious/cultural reasons) is on my last nerve!!! Don’t wear work boots in the gym!!! AAAAAH!!!

Great post!! I am also interested in the question have you ever fired a client…just couldn’t stand a person…they didn’t want to work, were rude or whatever.

Left side of her body? Well clearly her last trainer did not to a good job….

Haha – this made me laugh out loud! I’ve been picturing people working out in 3 piece suits or jeans/ballet slippers. How do you keep a straight face when a client shows up like that?
