More Free Yoga

2010 January 10

Today I decided to give myself a break from running, spinning and strength training and tried a little yoga on ExerciseTV on Demand.

(Yes, I have the oldest TV on the planet)

Usually I stick with my yoga for runners from YogaDownload, but today I wanted to try something different. When I found workouts from Yogaworks on demand, I decided I’d give the 50 minute Body Slim workout a try.
It was a slow start. The workout begins with “yoga abdominal” moves. The yoga moves were crunches and bicycles. I know I’m picky, but when I do yoga, I want to do yoga. For me yoga is not about doing crunches.
After the short abdominal series the workout got much better. It includes sun salutation A, B & C at a fast, heat building pace.

The difference between this yoga video and my regular YogaDownload podcast, is that this one focuses on moving. While the other one focuses on opening up the hamstrings, glutes, and psoas.
For the most part, I need the lengthening more so than the moving. However, I would gladly recommend the Body Slim yoga for someone who is new to yoga or needs to get moving and build a little bit of heat.

What’s your favorite type of yoga?

Heather – you’re doing exactly what I would suggest doing. Do you have access to a live intro class? Either way, remember to tell the instructor that you’re new. There’s nothing to be terrified of, everyone started somewhere!

Gina – I’ll have to check that one out. Thanks for the recommendation! I sometimes, torture Rick by watching some of their programs just to recommend them to clients and friends. However, I’ll probably only talk about ones I actually did on the blog.

Thanks for the suggestion! I always try to find new and good Exercise TV programs, so I appreciate hearing your opinions. I will try this for sure. I did a yoga for abs the other day, I believe it was called “Straight to Core”. It was short (8 minutes) but super powerful! It wasn’t really yoga, just a great ab workout.

    Oh great post, Jess!!!

“For me yoga is not about doing crunches.”–TOTALLY AGREE!

And this is great b/c I get asked about 98767987678 times per day if i know of any “good beginner free yoga dvd’s”…would you say this is something i could recommend to people? Honestly I dont need a dvd, I have my own brain and just wing it so never know what to say to people. I would hate to tell em to spend 30 bucks on a dvd that sucks. So i recommend checking stuff out from the library or used on amazon but that’s so broad.

Do you have any faves? Not podcasts b/c true beginners need visuals, not just audio, ya know?!

Averie, I do recommend the Yoga Works DVD. It’s basic and pretty good for beginners. The podcasts on YogaDownloads.com may also good for beginners because it includes a printable pose guide. Its almost like downloading a book with the name of the pose along with a picture. Also, some of their downloads include video or the pose picture.

I’m a Bikram yoga (hot box yoga) fan. But truth be told, I haven’t been in years. My friend Suzanne and I took a handful of classes together a few years ago and I remember feeling totally refreshed yet mellow when walking out the door.

I haven’t seen King Corn, but I have wanted to for a while now. I should! I’m sure if Nick and I saw this movie we would no longer be shocked about the corn in brownies!

You know, I’ve never tried yoga, and I’m actually a little confused. Where would it fit into a weight loss regimen? I don’t know anything about it, honestly, but would it would sort of help with strengthening and toning?

Ashley – Depending on the type of yoga it is, depends on how it fits into a weight loss regimen. It can be cardio, it can be strenght training, it can be stretching or it can just be meditation with movement. I know that answer doesn’t really help, but it really depends on what type of yoga you are practicing and what you want to get out of it.

I have just started going to class after doing yoga on my own for a while, and I have to say, yoga is not for sissies!! :> My arms were shaking in some of the poses, and I consider myself a strong girl. Such a nice complement to my weight lifting/cardio routines.
    But I don’t do a specific practice yet…

I haven’t tried yoga in ages and your post has made me want to get back into it! I’ll check out ExerciseTV on Demand and want to try hot yoga.

I always forget about how many fitness options there are on On Demand. The past few times I’ve done yoga I used Yoga Download. I like the hip opening flow, core yoga, and power yoga. I wish I had more patience for yoga. Or maybe just more time? I like getting a good sweat on and always choose cardio over yoga.

I did this same video on demand last week and really enjoyed it. I have only been doing yoga for about two months now; I still consider myself a beginner and this video was perfect for me. I was definitely sweating!
