Princess and The Pea Part II

2009 November 16

The foundations of good health are good diet, good exercise and good sleep, but two out of three doesn’t get you there,” Dr. Anne Calhoun, a neurology professor at the University of North Carolina.

My apartment has approximately 450 square feet of space. It houses two humans and NINE pillows!! That’s not because were hosting slumber parties on a weekly basis. Its because, I can never find a pillow that allows me to get a good nights sleep. I swear I’m the princess from The Princess and the Pea.

I have pillows at every price point imaginable. Price seems to mean very little when finding a pillow that works. You can imagine my anxiousness when yesterday, we decided that our current pillows were the source of neck pain and a pinched nerve. According to WebMD, these are signs that it’s was time for a new pillow.

Signs that you need a new pillow:

  • headaches
  • neck pains
  • shoulder and arm numbness or discomfort
  • sometimes even sneezing and wheezing

WebMD also provides guidelines on buying that perfect pillow. I’m not sure that my new pillow is perfect as I didn’t fall asleep until after 2 a.m., but I didn’t experience any of the above symptoms. I’m hoping that the pillow isn’t to blame for my restless night.

The best part of my pillow shopping was that the holiday lights are up at Columbus Circle!

Despite the fact that I’m frustrated from my lack of sleep, I’m thankful for the fact that I generally don’t need tons of sleep to feel good. How do you pick out your pillows?

I love that quote at the beginning of this post.
Relating to pillows, Nick and I both got some contour pillows last year for Christmas. We both really like them, and I feel like they do help me get a better sleep. Next on our list, a contour mattress! They are seriously expensive, so I’ve been saving.

This reminds me we need some new pillows. I usually buy cheap ones at Target…I’m scared to buy nice pillows because I might get hooked and we can’t afford that!! LOL
But I know with my husband’s allergies, replacing pillows often can help.

I totally just bought a pillow from Target yesterday! I go by “poofiness” factor, and also firmness. If they’ve got a good bit of both, I’ll go for it. Plus it was 10 dollars. So cost too. Very scientific! ;)

I can never seem to find quite the right ones. I like mine fluffy like a cloud, my husband likes his flat. So I got one that was medium and him one that is soft or something. it’s ok but now mine seems to sag, I probably need a new one.
