Spices are the one thing my kitchen is well equipped with. Before heading out to the grocery store today, I checked to see if our collection of spices included dried cilantro. Sure enough it was tucked away in the back corner of the cabinet. I usually buy fresh cilantro therefore, I wasn’t sure how to tell if this spice was fresh or not. It smelled weird, but does dried cilantro smell like fresh cilantro?
Maybe, I’m the last one find out that if its a McCormick spice, you can look up the date the spice was made on their website.
Its nice to know that 4 spices in my collection were all born in 1999. I guess its time to buy some new ones. I should have known because these were bought before I started shopping at
Whole Paycheck and
Westerly for groceries.
Since I didn’t buy these spices in 1999, I’m wondering how long they sat on the grocery store shelves before they made their way into my home??? When I win the lottery I’ll stay home all day and make my own spices.

After a nice long brunch with my old roomies today (Hi D!), I was feeling too lazy to do a complete workout. I did however
sneak in 3.5 miles of walking today and 15 minutes of lunges and
core work. My 1/2 marathon training officially begins tomorrow! Hope you’ve had a great weekend!

I cringe to think of how old some of my spices are. And many I acquired from an old roommate, who probably had them for a while before that too! One spice that never goes old at my place though is cinnamon. I tear through a huge bag of that stuff a month!
Ooo yeah, I definitely need to check on some of my spices too. That is a great tool, thanks for the tip!
I’m really excited to follow along on your half training! I’m going to start training for mine (which is in May) “officially” in January. I’m really nervous!
I’m nervous to check on the age of some of my spices! I do try to look at the expiration dates on them…most of the time
What half are you running? I’m doing one on December 20 and I cannot wait!
The other day I was cleaning out my cabinets and found spices from three apts ago ha
Wow…..who knew! Thanks for passing along the info!
Your race pic on your previous post…you look sooo cold. Been there. Gosh, yea.
Good luck w/ your 1/2 marathon training.
JUst to let you know too girl, I read all your posts, but am having a hard time commenting on everyone’s posts all the time, but I always read and drop by to type when I catch a break and of course, always appreciate the commetns you leave for me, too
The spices in our cabinet are ANCIENT!!!!! YIKES!! I don’t even want to know how old they are….
This is so cool! Thanks so much. I like it’s name…the fresh tester! I do cook alot with my spices, but I also know I have some old ones. Some of those buggers are like $7 a pop, it would be a shame if they are expired!!
Great reminder, I NEED to check my spices, bad. That was actually pretty funny
Good luck tomorrow with the first day of training!
Suzanne introduced me to a spice store called Penzey’s. All the spices are fresh! The store itself is a little bit of heaven on Earth, but you can also buy spices online and in gift packages if there’s not a store in your area. I bought a gift package and sent it to my dad for his birthday….he loves it!
Joanna – Thank you for the recommendations! I’ll have to check it out.
Spices are a little forgotten thing to check in the kitchen. I am super careful about expiration dates, but sometimes I do let this go. Thanks so much for the reminder!
Hahaha we did that in my kitchen. It was fairly horrifying!
aaaaah i don’t wanna know i don’t wanna know! i’m in denial about my makeup too.
