Kool-Aid in My Water Bottle
My morning started off with a 60 minute spin ride with my friend Richard at Soul-Cycle.
This is THE place to take spin classes in NYC right now. Soul Cycle is like a yoga studio filled with bikes. There are no locker rooms or showers. The lights are dim. Space is minimal. When you walk in the door you immediately feel the heat and energy from the current session. Bring on the Bikram spin! I was sweating before I even got into the actual studio.

In order to guarantee a space in any of their classes, you must book your bike 7 days in advance. The real kicker is that the classes cost $32.00!!! Yes, $32.00… infreakinsane! I was willing to shell out the big bucks to see what the buzz is all about.
The Verdict
I drank the Kool-Aid and loved it! Immediately after class I wanted to sign up for next Saturday. My endorphins almost allowed me to justify spending the money. However, 1 Soul Cycle class a week for one month is $128.00. Not gonna happen, the Kool-Aid wasn’t strong enough.
My complaint about the class itself is that it contained a few “filler moves”. Such as push-ups on the bike and right/left elbow bends (what the heck?). The energy in the studio was great, the music was great, but the price tag sucks! I could almost buy a monthly gym membership at Equinox for the price of 4 classes.
Did it measure up to my standards of what makes a good class?
Yes, the instructor scored an 8 out of 10.
What fitness trend would you like to try out that may be out of your normal price range?
I still want to try out Physique 57 at some point, but that will have to wait until next month.

Fantastic!! I have only done spinning once, and I really enjoyed it, but this sounds like such a rush! I can’t believe it’s 32 dollars, that’s crazy, but I might be able to do it once, or twice, just to experience it. For me, I have trouble justifying 10 dollars for a yoga class! Once I am full time at my job though, I am going to start taking yoga once or twice a week.
I did see that Biggest Loser article, but thanks for sharing it with me!! Crazy huh? But, not surprising. That type of weight loss is just too outstanding for it to be ALL safe. Sad.
Too bad it’s so pricey. Sounds like a great workout!
I love the concept, but the price…OMG I was *just* today having this convo w/ another lady at yoga class.
The scene: me a 33 yr old mother and yoga teacher.
Her: late 20s/early 30s, no kids, married and her husband was also there praciting. They were trying to get me to go to this other studio that’s $18/class AND it’s 40 mins one way. And the class is 2 hrs. Do the math, that’s 4 hrs outta the house. Childcare is a minimim of $10/hr. So that’s $40 in childcare, plus the class. $60. They were not grasping why I was at this place today which is $10 b/c it’s at a dude’s house…and on Sat morning my hubs can watch Skylar. But yes, some people are totally clueless and don’t get money, budgets, etc. Even if I “can” afford it, I chose not to. It’s gluttonous and not in the spirit of what yoga is to me.
That’s my long saga
Haha, glad it was worth $32.00, that;s crazy you have to book in advance…must be an awesome class like you said.
Whoa. I would be up for trying it at least once too though.
I’d honestly love to just try some of the classes I hear people talking about – like Zumba, Body Pump, even Spinning! When I can run outside for free though I have a hard time forking over the money for gym classes. Maybe some day!
I would have tried it, too! But push ups on the bike are not cool in my book. I’ve been to classes where there instructor thinks that’s a good idea and I just put my head down and spin.
Wow, thats crazy!
Right now a gym membership is out of my budget, thats what I love about running. Free minus the cost of shoes. But I think I’d love to take some sort of strength class. I get tons of cardio in at home, but an lacking in strength training.I’m a bit intimidated by it all.
Wow! $32/class. I wonder what the instructor gets paid!
Wow 32 for a class….that is some pretty strong Kool Aid lol…I am glad you liked it!
Wowzers! For $32 a class they should be pedaling for you!!! LOL
